Re “Harris’s Defeat Is Not the End of the Story,” by Gail Collins (column, Dec. 1):

After the 2016 and 2024 defeats of Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris, I cannot help but predict that the first woman president of the United States will be a Republican. Nine of the 25 women currently in the Senate and four of the 12 women governors are Republicans; these positions are the two big steppingstones to the presidency other than serving as vice president.

I am a proud Democrat, but it feels to me that the electorate might vote for a woman to the highest office, just not a Democratic woman.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Gail! I am with you and your optimism about electing a woman president.

I love what you quoted Gloria Steinem saying about Native American tribes in which “the grandmothers choose the chief and can depose him.”

I am a grandmother of seven. I have many friends who are grandmothers. We are smart, politically astute and passionate in our devotion to our country. Unfortunately, there are still a few who sadly say, “I will never live to see a woman president.”

We cannot allow that defeatist way of thinking to permeate our politics! Gail, I am with you. Hope for a female president is very much alive.
