There was an explosion and fire on Tuesday at a Jose Cuervo tequila factory in the city of Tequila, Mexico, a spokesman for the local government said.

The official, Andrés Chávez, confirmed the explosion and fire in a brief phone interview on Tuesday night. There were some local reports of deaths and injuries, but Mr. Chávez said that he was unable to confirm them.

The explosion occurred in the center of Tequila, the Mexican news outlet Milenio reported. The city lies about 40 miles by road northwest of Guadalajara in the western state of Jalisco.

Tequila’s mayor, José Alfonso Magallanes, said on social media late Tuesday that firefighters and other officials were still at the scene, and that the incident was not yet under control.

Representatives for Jose Cuervo did not immediately respond to messages on Tuesday night. A woman who answered the phone at Tequila’s fire department said that she was not authorized to comment.

This is a developing story.
