Los Angeles was bracing Monday after an extraordinary weekend of demonstrations, spurred by federal immigration authorities conducting a series of immigration raids across the region.
Though the protests were limited in size and location, law enforcement officers responded with crowd-control munitions, tear gas and flash-bang grenades.
California officials intend to sue President Trump for bypassing Gov. Gavin Newsom and taking control of the state’s National Guard, sending 2,000 soldiers into the city on Sunday.
Mayor Karen Bass also urged protesters to follow the law and said not all demonstrators had been peaceful. Some defaced self-driving Waymo cars and a group ventured onto the 101 freeway, bringing traffic to a halt.
Outside of downtown, life went on as normal in most parts of the city.
