To the Editor:
Re “Can Kamala Harris Step Up?,” by Gail Collins and Bret Stephens (The Conversation, July 23):
I rarely agree with Mr. Stephens’s conservative political views but do respect his articulate voice, intelligence, courage and integrity. He has been an outspoken critic of Donald Trump.
I was dumbfounded to read that his reservations regarding Kamala Harris would prevent him from casting his vote for her. His reservations regarding her past performance seem to make no allowances for her growth, nor do they seem to take into any account the tremendous outpouring of support.
I am sure that Mr. Stephens is well aware that not casting a vote would probably be tantamount to voting for Mr. Trump. We need your vote, Mr. Stephens.

I am horrified that Bret Stephens could say “we lived through four bumpy Trump years before, and I’m pretty sure we can survive another four.”
He and other privileged folks survived, but thousands upon thousands did not. Donald Trump caused death and suffering through his policies and funding rollbacks on health, food subsidies, the environment and gun violence, to name a few.
Forty percent of Covid deaths, by some counts, occurred unnecessarily because of his anti-science stance. His Capitol riot led to the deaths of five people. He put migrant children in cages. His packed Supreme Court continues to put deadly policies in place. And that’s just this country.
