Famine has been confirmed in Gaza City, the UN-backed body responsible for monitoring food security said for the first time on Friday.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) raised its classification to Phase 5, worst level on its food insecurity scale.
It says famine has been confirmed in the Gaza Governorate, which includes Gaza City, with “catastrophic conditions” expected to spread into Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September.
