Biden’s Speech as Convention Begins

Re “Highlights From Night 1 of the Democratic Convention” (nytimes.com, Aug. 19):

It was a night of wonderful, inspiring, supportive talk about Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, about President Biden, and appropriate jabs at Donald Trump.

And when Mr. Biden gave the final speech of the night, he spoke about his and Ms. Harris’s accomplishments so far during this term, and his hopes for our country’s future.

The president spoke for nearly an hour with so much energy and clarity about how America needed to remain a democracy and wipe out the rampant hate and greed.

It seemed to me that if it hadn’t been for Mr. Biden’s addled performance in his debate with Donald Trump, there wouldn’t have been such a clamor for him to abandon seeking a second term.

When he first ran for the Senate, he was considered so young, but still won, and now when he sought a second term, he’s told that he’s too old.

I found this heartbreaking.

When I began preaching, a good friend’s father with a wry sense of humor was in attendance. He nodded affirmatively through my sermon, and I expected his accolades. He gave me a warm smile and hug and said, “Dave, you were wonderful … but you missed a few good chances to sit down.”
